Mental Health Training for Line Managers

Do your line managers know how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental health issues in their team members, particularly during home-working? Do your line managers know the do’s and don’ts around supportive conversations around a team member’s mental health, and the correct language for signposting onto the professional support resources you have in place?

With remote working arrangements set to remain for the foreseeable future, line managers are now at the front line when it comes to recognising the symptoms of mental ill health and managing any mental health issues that may arise in their teams.

However, many line managers lack the confidence and skills to support and guide colleagues who are struggling with their emotional or mental health, and are unfamiliar with the format and boundaries of a supportive conversation.

Our bespoke 2 hour Mental Health Training for Line Managers course, delivered virtually, is a live and interactive instructor-led session that provides:

  • the basics around mental health
  • risk factors and protective factors around mental health at work
  • how to spot the signs of crisis, distress and mental health issues in team members
  • how to skilfully handle conversations around mental health and emotional distress
  • Best practices guidelines for signposting on to professional support services such as your EAP, the GP or other professional support services you may have in place
  • tips for managers to promote and maintain positive mental health within their teams

The session includes fully evidence-backed statistics and data, a framework for managing mental health issues as they arise, plus the opportunity to discuss any specific issues and take advice from our instructors – all fully qualified workplace counsellors, MHFA Instructors and mental wellbeing coaches, with many years’ experience in the corporate environment.

Men’s Health Week 15-20th June

The statistics on men’s health issues demonstrate a crisis in the wellbeing of our menfolk.

Men are far more likely than women to die from mental health crises, alcoholism, drug abuse, heart disease, infectious diseases such as Covid-19, cancer and smoking-related diseases. In the UK, 1 in 5 men dies before the age of 65.

This year, Men’s Health Week is taking place from 15th to 20th June, and we have three special one hour workshops, all presented by our fully qualified and experienced male presenters, for your employees to access virtually:

“Kindness and Compassion for Men” – Evolution and societal pressures have traditionally encouraged men and boys to feel that kindness and compassion are weak or “feminine” traits. However, kindness and compassion are attitudes and practices that require honesty and courage – and allow us to face up to the difficulties of our own lives and relationships, and respond to ourselves and others in a way that is supportive and empathetic. This ground-breaking session is presented by James, our cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy specialist, and explains the obstacles and instincts that exacerbate rather than alleviate our suffering, and provides a range of practical techniques to enable and facilitate compassion and kindness both towards ourselves and others.

“Men’s Health” – this fantastic one hour workshop is created for men, by our award-winning men’s health specialist, Peter. The session enlightens and informs men about their wellbeing, and encourages men to get their minds and bodies on track. Highly interactive, the session covers physical activity, weight, safe alcohol consumption, cancer symptoms, prostate health, hypertension, mental health, accessing health services, and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

“Men’s Mental Health” – men in Britain are particularly vulnerable to mental health issues. Suicide rates are three times higher for men than women, alcohol and substance abuse is rife, male self-harming rates are escalating, and eating disorders in boys and men are becoming more prevalent.  This excellent men’s mental health workshop is presented by one of our male counselling psychotherapists, Chris, and educates men in the myriad ways they can enhance and improve their mental health. Includes signposting to your company’s existing professional mental health resources and those accessible in the wider community.

Reducing Conflict At Home

As home-working continues indefinitely for those who are able to work from home, many people are citing increasing pressures and conflicts in their relationships at home, with tempers flaring between partners, and towards children, and tensions running far higher than usual.

Our one-hour workshop for up to 100 employees per session – “Reducing Conflict At Home” – looks at a range of practical tips and techniques for resolving conflict in personal relationships, helping everyone stay grounded and calm.

Topics include:

  • Patterns of behaviour to avoid
  • Managing emotions and self-regulating
  • Identifying the unmet need
  • Observing rather than evaluating – for conflict-free interactions
  • Resolving conflict mindfully

This one hour session is presented by one of our highly experienced mental health professionals – a fully qualified BACP-accredited psychodynamic counsellor, occupational psychologist, cognitive behavioural therapist, mindfulness teacher and MHFA instructor.

The session is highly interactive and can be presented via Skype, Zoom, Webex, Blue Jeans, GoToWebinar or the video conferencing tool of your choice.

At Wellbeing Partners, our specialists and therapists are fully qualified mental health professionals (BSc BA, PDip, MSc), and are registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. Line Managers’ Mental Health Training

Our mind is at the very centre of who we are and how we relate to others. Our mental health doesn’t leave itself at the door when we arrive at work; it shapes who we are as employees as well as in our wider lives.

In the workplace, mental ill health is now the primary cause of long-term sickness absence for over one in five UK organisations, and growing. A recent survey of over 44,000 employees also found that only two in five felt their manager would be able to spot the signs they were struggling with poor mental health.

Line Managers are often lacking the confidence or knowledge in how to skilfully manage a mental health issue in their team, and so it is unsurprising they might be uncomfortable or feel that they are unable to support and guide employees who are struggling with their emotional or mental health.

Our bespoke Two Hour Mental Health Training for Line Managers is a short and very effective course that helps managers identify the signs of mental ill health in team members, and focuses on how line managers can skilfully handle conversations around mental health and emotional distress in their team, signposting on to appropriate professional support where necessary.

The session includes fully evidence-backed statistics and data, an action plan for managing mental health issues as they arise, relevant case studies and the Line Manager’s Resource book for each delegate. The training is presented and facilitated by our team of fully qualified mental health instructors, who are also qualified counsellors with many years’ experience in the corporate environment.

Wellbeing Partners are the mental and physical wellbeing specialists, providing whole-person health programmes to workplaces around the UK. We are a leading provider of on-site stress management and full-service employee mental health services ( http://mindfulnessintheworkplace.org/our-services/ ) and have a full suite of integrated wellbeing solutions that focus on awareness, prevention and remedy that help to keep your employees healthy, productive, focused and creative.

The Digital Detox Workshop

Smartphones, computers, laptops, tablets, readers, televisions – do you spend too much time staring at a screen? Join the club! The average British office worker spends up to 12.5 hours a day at work and home gazing into a variety of screens.

Is that too much? Hell yes!

And if your employees are expected to multitask media – switching between multiple screens – as a part of their job, you could be subjecting them to long-term memory problems, attention deficit disorders and impaired dopamine function. A ticking timebomb for employers.

How’s this for a list of side effects of excessive screen time: Increased levels of stress and anxiety; Increased frequency of emotions such as fear, worry, anger, guilt, shame; Hyper-aroused nervous system; Sensory overload; Impaired sleeping patterns; Significant damage to eyes and eyesight; Increased risk of cardiovascular disease; Joint and musculoskeletal damage; Shrinkage and loss of brain tissue; Long-term memory loss; Reduced ability to process emotions; Reduced ability to recognise emotions of others; Impaired dopamine function; Severely inhibited attention and concentration; Reduced decision-making capability; Negative impact on cognitive efficiency; Reduced impulse control; Increased food cravings and susceptibility to weight gain; Disturbance of hormonal balance.

Our ground-breaking new workshop – The Digital Detox – explores:

  • Overwhelmed by Screens!
  • How Much is Too Much?
  • The Effects of Excessive Screen Time
  • Warning Signs of Screen Addiction
  • Why is it so Addictive?
  • Quotes from Technology Creators
  • The Particular Danger of Multitasking Media
  • Preparation for Reducing Screen Time
  • The Digital Detox
  • What Next?

This workshop takes place in your office and is a 60-minute session offering participants the facts and solutions for reducing the impact of screen-based technology on mental, physical and social health. We pay special attention to the dangers of multitasking media, and offer a wide range of tips, techniques and advice for protecting the wellbeing of your employees from this massive 21st century health concern.

Please get in touch with us at [email protected] or call Nick Winfield on 07773 767248 to book your Digital Detox Workshop. To discover more about our whole-person health solutions for employees, go to: www.mindfulnessintheworkplace.org

Mental Health First Aid Training Course – 6th and 7th June 2018

Our mind is at the very centre of who we are and how we relate to others. Our mental health doesn’t leave itself at the door when we arrive at work. It shapes who we are as employees as well as in our wider lives.

Some people naturally cope well with the structure of working life, and some people need more guidance in order to reach their potential and thrive at work and in life.

How do we support and guide employees who are struggling with their emotional or mental health? What should we say and what support is there for people who need more psychological help than we can offer?

We invite you to join our two-day certified Mental Health First Aid training course, for a small group of 10 delegates, in central London on 6th and 7th June 2018.

Mental Health First Aid Two Day training course (MHFA) qualifies participants as certified Mental Health First Aiders:

  • An in depth understanding of adult mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support

Learning takes place across four manageable sessions across two days. Through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions, each session is built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan. The course will be run by our certified and highly experienced MHFA trainer, David Robinson.

The course is over two full days, 6th and 7th June from 9.30am to 5pm. The cost is £350 per delegate.

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to book yourself or any colleagues onto the course.
